So happy to host Cecelia Dowdy on today’s Friday Five.
- What inspired your latest story?
Several years ago, my sister shared an article with me that was printed in our local newspaper. The article described how foster kids had to grow up quickly since they did not have parents to help them once they turned eighteen. I figured some of these children would have a hard time trusting people, and I imagined their experiences would affect their love lives. Sweet Delights is about a woman who grew up in the foster care system. She’s a loner and has a hard time trusting others.
- Describe your decision to become a writer.
One day, several years ago, during my lunch break, I realized I’d forgotten to bring the book that I’d been reading. So, I spent my lunch break writing. I’ve been writing ever since. I found a great group of authors via RWA and WRW (RWA local chapter). I went to conferences and I was anxious to land that first book contract!
- What the hardest thing about being a writer?
Rejection. It’s hard to remain positive when your work is rejected by traditional publishers.
- What’s the best thing about being a writer?
You’re in charge of your characters’ lives. It’s great to create stories and you get to decide what will happen to your characters.
- How do you balance writing and the rest of life?
I work full time and I have a family. I often have to take off from work just to finish writing my books. If I have the energy, I’ll try and get up early to squeeze in some extra writing time.
